The machine should go at a steady pace and create evenly spaced stitches on each of the different types of fabric you tried. With a sewing machine and a little patience you have full control on where the pockets go, what kind of buttons you use, and where the hemline stops. Ironing is a companion skill to sewing.
Get some hands on experience. It is always recommended to discuss with your friends and neighbors who have sewing machines.
